A single stick (100-150cm) manipulated around the body with spins, wraps, and isolations. More physical than poi — uses the whole body.

Contact staff is a heavier variant designed to roll across the arms, neck, and back. Dragon staff adds spokes at the ends for dramatic visual patterns.

Getting started

A broomstick or PVC pipe works for practice. Learn the basic helicopter, fishtail, and figure-8 before trying contact moves.

Fire staffs have kevlar wicks on both ends. Extra caution needed — a burning staff has a much wider danger zone than poi.

DIY — Make your own staff

Practice staff (10 min, ~10 EUR)

Materials: aluminium tube or wooden dowel (130-150cm, ~25mm diameter), grip tape

  1. Cut tube/dowel to desired length (shoulder height is a good start)
  2. Wrap the center 30cm with grip tape or hockey tape
  3. Optional: add rubber end caps to protect floors

Fire staff (30 min, ~25 EUR)

Materials: aluminium tube (130cm), 2x kevlar wick (5cm x 40cm), kevlar thread, 2x wooden dowels (10cm, to fit inside tube), screws

  1. Insert wooden dowels into each end of the aluminium tube (these anchor the wicks)
  2. Wrap kevlar wick tightly around each end (15-20cm from tip)
  3. Sew the wick in place with kevlar thread, or secure with wire
  4. Wrap the center with grip tape
Fire staffs have a wide danger zone — both ends are burning. Clear a large area and always have a safety spotter.
