juggling

The classic. Three or more objects thrown and caught in repeating patterns. The foundation of all circus arts.

Modern juggling goes far beyond the basic cascade — numbers juggling, siteswap notation, and body throws push the art form forward.

Getting started

Start with 3 beanbag balls and learn the cascade. Once comfortable, try the reverse cascade, columns, and mills mess.

DIY — Make your own juggling balls

Balloon balls (5 min per ball, ~1 EUR)

Materials: 2-3 balloons per ball, rice or bird seed (~120g per ball), small plastic bag, scissors

  1. Fill a small plastic bag with ~120g rice, tie it closed tightly
  2. Cut the neck off a balloon
  3. Stretch the balloon around the rice bag, covering it completely
  4. Wrap a second balloon (different colour) around for durability
  5. Optional: add a third balloon layer

Sewn beanbags (30 min per ball, ~3 EUR)

Materials: cotton fabric, crushed walnut shells or millet (~130g), sewing machine

  1. Cut 4 panels using a juggling ball template (pear-shaped)
  2. Sew panels together, leaving a 3cm opening
  3. Turn inside out, fill with ~130g filling
  4. Hand-stitch the opening closed
