A spool spun on a string between two handsticks. Tricks include high throws, grinds, whips, and multi-diabolo patterns.
Originally a Chinese toy, the diabolo is now a competitive discipline. Modern triple-bearing diabolos spin for minutes on their own.
Getting started
Start with a fixed-axle diabolo to build technique. Learn the basic spin-up, toss, and string tricks before moving to 2 or 3 diabolos.
DIY
Diabolos need precise axle engineering for smooth spinning. Buy rather than DIY.
What to buy:
- Fixed-axle diabolo (beginners, ~10 EUR) — builds technique
- Triple-bearing diabolo (intermediate, ~30-50 EUR) — spins for minutes
- Handsticks: aluminium with rubber grips, thin string
The string matters: thinner = less friction = faster tricks. Start medium-thick.
