A pair of handheld fans used for sweeping, geometric patterns. Visually striking — fans create walls of light or flame that fill space like no other prop.

Clack fans make a satisfying sound when opened/closed. Silk fans add flowing fabric. Fire fans have kevlar-wicked spines.

Getting started

Practice fans are affordable and forgiving. Focus on basic flowers, stalls, and transitions between open and closed positions.

DIY — Make your own fans

Fans are one of the harder props to DIY due to the folding mechanism and spine alignment.

Simple fabric practice fans (45 min, ~15 EUR)

Materials: 6-8 bamboo sticks or wooden slats (30cm), fabric (silk or polyester), strong glue, a bolt for the pivot

  1. Drill a hole at one end of each slat for the pivot bolt
  2. Stack the slats and bolt them together at the pivot point (loose enough to fan open)
  3. Cut fabric in a semicircle to match the spread of the fanned slats
  4. Glue or sew the fabric to each slat
  5. Add a stopper or ribbon to limit the opening angle

For fire fans: buy from a specialist maker — the kevlar wicks and metal spines need precise engineering.
