FireLEDPractice
Two shorter staffs (90-130cm each) manipulated simultaneously, one in each hand. They can be spun, tossed, juggled, and used for contact moves. Many patterns transfer directly from poi.
History
Evolved from baton twirling and single staff traditions, with roots in Shaolin staff practices. Double staff borrows heavily from poi due to the similarity in bilateral manipulation — both involve controlling two objects, one per hand.
Getting started
- If you know poi, you already know the foundations — weaves, butterflies, and flowers all transfer
- Start with same-time same-direction spinning before trying split-time
- The staffs are shorter than a standard staff but longer than batons
- Add grip tape to the center of each staff for a handle zone
Key moves
- Butterfly — both staffs spinning in the same plane, mirrored
- Weave — crossing the staffs in front of and behind the body
- Contact transfer — rolling one staff across the body while spinning the other
- Tosses — throwing and catching while maintaining the other staff's spin
