Timing & Direction

Technique

The four fundamental relationships between how two props move relative to each other, defined by timing (same-time vs. split-time) and direction (same vs. opposite).

The four modes

  • Same-time, Same-direction — both poi pass the same point simultaneously, spinning the same way. The "together" mode.
  • Same-time, Opposite-direction (Butterfly) — both poi pass the same point simultaneously but spin in opposite directions. Creates a mirror effect.
  • Split-time, Same-direction — both spin the same direction but 180 degrees out of phase. When one is at the top, the other is at the bottom.
  • Split-time, Opposite-direction — opposite directions and 180 degrees out of phase. Typically the most challenging for beginners.

How to learn

  1. Start with same-time modes — both poi moving together is most natural
  2. The butterfly (same-time, opposite-direction) is usually the first trick learned
  3. Split-time requires independent hand control — practice one hand at a time
  4. Split-time opposite-direction often takes the longest to "click"

Applies to

All paired props — poi, double staff, fans, any dual-wielded prop.
